Choosing the right bag making machine is not about finding the fastest or the cheapest model. The real questions are: which bag, from which resin, in what volume? Once you answer those three, the machine type, number of lines and options almost choose themselves. This guide takes you through the selection process step by step.
Step 1: Match the machine to the bag style
Every bag family has its own seal geometry. The wrong machine type cannot make the right product, however good it is.
T-shirt bags
The classic handled carrier bag for supermarkets and markets. Gusseted tubular film is bottom-sealed, then the handle area is punched out to create the t-shirt shape. You need a t-shirt bag machine plus a punching press. HDPE film between 8 and 30 microns is typical.
Flat bags and side seal products
Flat bags, jewellery bags, zipper bags, courier mailers and bags with adhesive tape are made by side sealing. Folded film is fed in and a hot knife cuts and seals both edges in one stroke. A side seal bag machine is the right choice here; courier bags also call for tape application and flap folding options.
Bottom seal sacks
Heavy-duty packaging, industrial, food and agricultural sacks are sealed at the bottom. Thick film (50–150 microns and above) needs a wide, powerful sealing bar for a safe seal, which is why bottom seal bag machines are used for this segment.
Garbage bags and freezer bags on roll

Wicket and loop handle bags
Wicketed bags are used on automatic bread and food filling lines and need a dedicated wicket stacker. Loop handle bags need an extra handle sealing station. Both are made with modules added to side seal based machines, and the best way to define the right module is to review a bag sample together.
Step 2: Resin — HDPE, LDPE or PP
- HDPE: Crisp, stiff film that is thin yet strong. Common for t-shirt bags and thin garbage bags; its sealing window is narrower than LDPE.
- LDPE / LLDPE: Soft, flexible and impact-resistant. Used for boutique bags, heavy bin liners, industrial sacks and courier mailers.
- PP: Glossy and clear; popular for jewellery, textile and food packaging. Sealing parameters differ from polyethylene.
Sealing bars, temperature control and knife design are tuned to these materials, so tell your supplier upfront if you will run more than one. If you plan to extrude your own film, blown film machines belong in the investment plan too.
Step 3: Work out the capacity
A simple formula: target monthly bags ÷ (working days × hours per day × 60) = required bags per minute. Then add 20–30% for job changes, roll changes and maintenance stops.
Example: 6 million bags a month over 25 days at 16 hours a day gives 6,000,000 ÷ (25 × 16 × 60) ≈ 250 bags/min. With the allowance you should target roughly 300–325 bags/min, which is a stretch for one lane and more realistic on a double-line machine. Longer bags and thicker film reduce bags per minute, so base the calculation on the size you will run most.
Step 4: Floor space, power and compressed air
- Space: Beyond the machine footprint, plan for roll loading, stacking and packing areas and a forklift aisle. Sizing the room to the machine alone is the most common mistake.
- Power: Sealing heaters and servo drives require a three-phase supply. If a blown film line is planned as well, transformer capacity must be calculated separately.
- Compressed air: Pneumatic cylinders, the punching press and some stackers need a compressor with a dryer delivering clean, dry air.
- Environment: A ventilated area away from dust and excessive humidity protects seal quality and electronics.
Step 5: Automation level and ease of use
A servo-driven machine with PLC and touchscreen HMI makes recipe storage, counting and fault diagnosis easy and reduces dependence on highly skilled operators. Photocell registration, automatic stacking and static elimination raise output quality. Your product variety and operator experience decide how far you need to go.
