How to Start a Plastic Bag Factory: Machines and Steps

This guide walks through the machines, production flow and infrastructure you need to start a plastic bag factory.

1. Decide on product and market

Planning starts with the product, not the machine. Will you make t-shirt bags for retailers, garbage bags on roll for households and institutions, courier mailers for e-commerce or heavy sacks for industry? 2. Production flow and required machines

In a typical bag plant, raw material becomes finished product in this order:

a) Film extrusion — blown film machine

Resin pellets are turned into tubular or flat film on a blown film machine. Making your own film gives full control over gauge, width and blend, and lowers product cost. You can start by buying film rolls and running only a converting machine, but as volume grows a film line usually becomes the most profitable investment. b) Printing (optional)

For branded bags, a printing machine, typically flexo, follows film extrusion. Printed work adds value but requires photocell registration on the bag machine. Many producers start with plain bags and add printing later.

c) Sealing and cutting — bag making machine

The film is converted on a bag making machine chosen for the product:

e) Recycling

3. Floor space and layout

A blown film line has a tall tower, so ceiling height is a deciding factor in machine selection. Plan these zones separately:

• Resin storage and feeding
• Film extrusion (mind the ceiling height)
• Printing and ink storage, if applicable
• Bag making machines and stacking area
• Packing and finished goods warehouse
• Recycling area
• Forklift and pallet truck routes, buffer space for rolls

A one-directional material flow, with resin entering at one end and finished goods leaving at the other, simplifies internal logistics and reduces wasted labour.

4. Power, air and cooling

• Power: Blown film heaters and motors are the plant's largest consumers. Calculate total installed load and plan a transformer and power factor correction if needed.
• Compressed air: Bag machines, presses and stackers need a compressor and dryer of adequate capacity.
• Cooling: Film extrusion relies on the air ring, and some lines also need a water chiller.
• Ventilation: Extracting heat and fumes around extrusion and sealing areas matters for working conditions.

5. Staffing

Headcount depends on plant size, but the core roles are a film line operator, bag machine operators, press and packing staff, a maintenance technician and a production planner. Shift work speeds up the payback on your machines. 6. Phased investment or turnkey line

There are two common routes into bag production:
